Consistent sailing key to Brits success in Holland

Holland Regatta - Team GBR - Consistent sailing key to Brits success in Holland
MEDEMBLIK, THE NETHERLANDS-(26-5-2005) The second day of the Holland Regatta began as the first sailors hit the water at 1000 sharp.  With 8-14 knots of breeze, shifty winds and bright sunshine in Medemblik the competitors were in for a good day of racing.  By the end of the day, the leader board had changed in almost every fleet demonstrating just how competitive Olympic class racing can be.

Ben Ainslie had another day of success, putting another first and second place under his belt.  They say the way to win a regatta is by sailing consistently and Ainslie is proving this statement to be true.  With only four points, he is ahead of Gasper Vincec who follows with 12 points overall.  Edward Wright seems to have smoothly made the transition into the Finn which he has been sailing since November 2004.  Also with a consistent day of results, Wright took two fourths which put him in a very close third place.

The Yngling fleet managed to complete another two races with Sarah Ayton and her team receiving mixed results.  They started the day with a fourth place finish, but in the second race the girls had trouble when their mast fitting broke and finished 16, dropping them down into third.

The Laser Radial fleet had some very close results with the top three women finishing within a mere four points of each other.  Charlotte Dobson fell to second place with Merel Witteveen from the Netherlands just behind her in third.  Finishing first was the former Europe sailor Sari Multala from Finland who secured a second and two first places.

Other notable performances for the day came from Lizzie Vickers, also sailing in a Laser Radial.  Following yesterday’s racing, Vickers was placed twenty-forth overall after being called over the line early in the second race.  Vickers, adamant that she had not crossed the starting line before the gun, took the matter to the jury and won redress.  A combination of good results and determination saw Vickers move into seventh place putting her in the top ten.  Sailing in the Star, Andy Beadsworth and David Carr, scored a fifth and a third resulting in the pair jumping up several places overall, finishing in a promising second at the end of the day.

The event continues through to Sunday 29 May.  Further information and results can be found on the event website www.hollandregatta.org.
